Meet Mutula Kilonzo Jr.
Mutula Kilonzo Junior, CBS, is a Kenyan advocate and the second Governor of Makueni County.
He served as the county’s senator from 2013 to 2022 before taking office as governor on 25 August 2022, succeeding Kivutha Kibwana. His career connects legal practice, parliamentary representation and the day-to-day responsibilities of county leadership.
He is the son of the late Mutula Kilonzo Sr., Makueni’s first senator. His own entry into elected office came through the 2013 by-election following his father’s death.

- 1994–1999
A foundation in law
Parliament’s education record lists a Bachelor of Laws at Nagpur University, following his schooling at Nairobi Milimani Secondary School and Jamuhuri Primary School.
- 1999–2013
Building a legal practice
He began at Kilonzo & Company Advocates as a pupil, became a partner in 2001 and a senior partner in 2007. His legal work spans commercial and criminal matters, family law and election petitions.
- 2013–2022
Representing Makueni in the Senate
Across two terms, he served as Senate Minority Whip and participated in committees concerned with ICT, finance, justice and human rights.

He received the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear honour, reflected in the initials CBS.

Makueni’s second governor
He took the oath of office at Unoa grounds in Wote. Lucy Mulili was inaugurated as deputy governor.
